How to Paste as a Native, Editable Equation

STEP 1

Click "Copy Editable Equation"

LaTeXTool writes rich MathML XML onto your clipboard. MathML encodes all mathematical superscripts, roots, and fractions losslessly.

STEP 2

Press Ctrl+V in Your Document

In your document editor (Word, Google Docs, Apple Pages), place your cursor and press Ctrl+V (or Cmd+V).

STEP 3

Edit or Format Directly

The equation is recognized as a native equation object — not a static picture. You can click into variables, change symbols, or adjust sizes seamlessly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about pasting LaTeX formulas into Microsoft Office documents.

How do I paste a LaTeX formula into Microsoft Word as an editable equation?▼

Enter your LaTeX formula in the box above and click "Copy Editable Equation (MathML)". Then open Microsoft Word, place your cursor where you want the equation, and press Ctrl+V (or Cmd+V on Mac). Word automatically detects the MathML clipboard format and turns it into a native, fully editable Word equation object.

Why does Microsoft Word need MathML instead of raw LaTeX?▼

While recent desktop versions of Microsoft Word have a basic LaTeX input mode, it often breaks on complex environments, multi-line matrices, custom spacing, and advanced symbols. MathML (Mathematical Markup Language) is the W3C standard recognized natively by Word's Office Math Markup Language (OMML) engine, guaranteeing exact visual parity and 100% editable symbols without syntax errors.

Does this also work with Google Docs, PowerPoint, and LibreOffice?▼

Yes! Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel use the same native equation engine as Word. In LibreOffice Math and Google Docs, you can paste equations or use Google Docs Equation mode. You can also click "Copy LaTeX Code" whenever you need standard TeX markup.

What should I do if Word pastes raw XML code instead of a formula?▼

In Microsoft Word, go to Word Options > Advanced > Cut, copy, and paste. Ensure that "Paste within the same document" and "Paste between documents" are set to Keep Source Formatting. Alternatively, press Alt + = in Word to open an empty equation box first, right-click, and select "Paste as MathML" or "Paste (Keep Source Formatting)".

Do I need to install MathType or any Word add-in?▼

No. You do not need MathType, third-party add-ins, or macro plugins. Our tool generates standard W3C MathML that Microsoft Word natively supports out of the box in Office 365, Word 2021, Word 2019, and Word 2016.

Are my formulas private and secure?▼

100% private. All LaTeX rendering and MathML conversion occur entirely client-side inside your browser via WebAssembly and KaTeX. No equation data is ever transmitted to a remote server.
